Early Childhood Education for Sustainable Development

Natalia A. Ryzhova

We all know how early childhood experiences can shape a person's interests in life. As for me, I have always loved nature. When I was a small child, our house was surrounded by flowers since early spring to late autumn. I remember myself totally fascinated by their beauty and harmony.
Another memory from my childhood is how my friends and I used to catch chafers in May, and how I admonished the other children to let the beetles go and not to hurt them. I had been looking forward to studying medicine, but then during our courses we had to study a vivisected frog, and I just couldn't stand it. So I chose another profile in biology and preserved the urge for protecting nature. Then I taught the things I learned to my children, and then to grandchildren.
Later I developed my ideas into an educational program, and surprisingly, it grew more and more successful over the years. Thus I hope to pass my feelings and ideas to larger groups of people worldwide: children, their parents and teachers, so that together we could create a future that is more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
